Severiano, Alejandrito and their father Alejandro dress in the traditional costumes of 'Los Viejos' (the old men) for La Viejada – an annual folkloric carnival celebrated during Xantolo (the Day of the Dead). Taking place in the Huasteca region of Veracruz in the small town of Tempoal, this spiritual time reunites the dead with the living, serving as a vital link between the past and the future. Hundreds of town residents of all ages dress in a diverse display of vibrant costumes. Amongst them you will find – los viejos (the old men), los diablos (the devils), las catrinas (an icon symbolizing the cycle of life and death), las embarazadas and las muxes (men dressed as women, pregnant or otherwise), and any variety of cowboy. Celebrating and honouring the dead, the mischievous and playful masked dancers cackle, howl and stomp while sipping homemade, fruit-flavoured alcohol. They parade through the streets, dancing their way to the local cemetery. Severiano, Alejandrito and Alejandro participate in La Viejada every year and take great pride in their tradition.
